We live in a traditional 2-story Colonial. Typically, there are four rooms downstairs, a hallway in the center, with stairs, and four rooms upstairs. We love our house, but almost since we bought it, we longed for a larger, more expansive living space. It's been hard to have people over, and now that our best friends also have the same number of kids as we do, it was getting nearly impossible to have all the kids over our house to play. Anytime anyone came over, we'd usually end up crammed into the kitchen or the little living room. And, we almost never used the front room, which we had turned into the playroom. It was hard to keep an eye on the little ones while they played in there, though.
So we decided to have the wall between the living room and the playroom ripped out.
This was the living room, as seen from the hallway:
And this was the playroom, also as seen from the hallway:
Now.....THIS is the living room!
And this:
And the kids like their new area with their table in front of the window:
Right at this moment, I am sitting in our loveseat, at a right angle to the flatscreen TV, typing on this computer. I can see the entire room, the hall and staircase, and into the hall with the half bath. It's FREAKIN' AWESOME!
Ahem.
We love it. Being without the TV and the play space for two weeks was tough, and the whole project started out a little shaky, but now, now...oh, it's wonderful. I am so happy we did it.
Ahh....we actually live in our whole house now. I'm already planning the Christmas party.

That looks great! The bigger space will be terrific for your growing and increasingly mobile family.
